SWEROCK UPDATED THE CAT® 988K WHEEL LOADER'S EMISSIONS STANDARDS WITH AN OVERHAUL

Swerock is a leading expert in the aggregates and concrete business in the Nordic countries, with operations in Finland also including open-pit mining.
The Cat® 988K wheel loader, used as the feeding machine at Swerock’s crushing station, had already reached 18,000 hours of operation. With 68,600 kilometers behind it, our customer estimated that at this point, the machine either needed to be replaced or overhauled to ensure it would continue to operate flawlessly in the future.

The customer chose the powertrain rebuild from the two options, as the machine had otherwise performed well, and they had experience with previous, smaller Caterpillar overhauls.
In addition to the cost level of the overhaul, the level of recycling and the lower overall emissions from refurbishing the machine also influenced the decision, as the company is conscious of the emissions it generates, and the overhaul allows them to better meet the needs of their customers.
Caterpillar’s rebuild program restores materials at the end of their lifecycle to like-new condition, reducing waste as well as energy and material consumption. The program offers environmental benefits, such as lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced demand for raw materials.

In the rebuild of Swerock’s Cat 988K loader, the powertrain was replaced, and the previous Stage IV emissions engine was upgraded to a factory-remanufactured Caterpillar engine meeting Stage V emissions standards. The Cat Reman® remanufacturing process restores parts to like-new condition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65-87% and raw material usage by 80-90%.
The selected extended rebuild + package also included the refurbishment of hydraulic cylinders and the replacement of hydraulic hoses. Additionally, the operator’s seat was replaced.
The rebuild, carried out at Avesco’s Kuopio facility, is one of the first emissions upgrade overhauls for Caterpillar in Europe. With the emissions upgrade, the machine now complies with the latest emissions regulations.*

“The Cat 988 is a reliable and efficient machine that fits our needs extremely well.” emphasizes Swerock's Fleet Manager, Joni Kokko.

The project began in December 2023, and the machine was handed over to the customer in March 2024. During this time, the customer used a similar machine in worksite.
The timeline and cost estimates were met, for which the customer also expressed appreciation. Communication between Avesco and the customer during the project was smooth.

“We were able to visit the Kuopio workshop to see the machine, and we were kept well informed throughout the process.” says Swerock’s Site Manager, Juuso Ajanko.

Since the rebuild, the machine has now clocked just over 1,000 hours, with the goal of running it for another 10,000 to 15,000 hours. The machine has also received positive feedback from the operators after the refurbishment.

The customer states that the Cat 988K is a very familiar and extremely well-suited machine for their needs, and with the overhaul, they still have the same powerful and reliable machine they know so well.

With their experience in both smaller and larger overhauls, the customer sees a great opportunity to continue extending the lifecycle of their machines through rebuild in the future.
To ensure the ongoing reliability of the machine, as with other Swerock machines, it is covered by Avesco's EasyService maintenance agreement.

Extend the lifespan of your trusted machine

Cat®-certified rebuilds are preventive maintenance that restore the machine to like-new condition and double its productive lifespan. In addition to powertrain overhauls, the program includes individual component refurbishment, engine overhaul, hydraulic overhaul (excavators only), and full machine overhaul.

During the overhaul, the machine receives the latest updates. Cat provides a warranty on all refurbished parts equivalent to that of new parts.
